What's the Problem? Why SHOULD We Care?
Here’s the issue: sea turtles are going extinct because of our diet. Yes, OUR DIET. People aren’t throwing away their trash, and it ends up in the ocean, then in sea turtles stomachs. People who need to fish for a living are catching turtles in their nets and either injuring them or killing them. People in other countries eat turtles for religious reasons, but sometimes it gets out of hand. People that eat fish are eating from places that don’t use turtle safe fishing methods. When you add all of this up, you get: TURTLES EXTINCT!!
So what are YOU doing wrong? Think about the last time you went to the beach: did you pick up your trash?Last time you ate sea food: did you buy it from a place that uses turtle safe fishing methods? Sea turtles aren't foreign animals--leatherbacks have been found in the Gulf of Maine. You're not only helping your self, but you're helping your body: the packaged food that turtles are choking on are bad for us because they're full of sugar and fat. The rings from soda that turtles are getting caught in are also full of sugar. So spread the word about endangered turtles. Who knows, you could start something.
Why should we care about sea turtles? Just like any other species, sea turtles are very important to the environment. For example, sea turtles are one of the only animals that eat sea grass. Sea grass needs to be kept short so it can grow across the ocean floor. Sea turtles keep the grass short and healthy. Sea grass is important for breeding grounds for lots of different fish and shellfish.
Sea turtles are also important to the economy. Some fisherman depend on fishing for their jobs, and if sea turtles go extinct, the underwater ecosystem would be unbalanced. The sea grass is also important to the economy--with out the sea grass, the species of fish that live there would be lost, the people that fish for them couldn't anymore. What if that was YOU? A lot of people don’t care about sea turtles--they just think “oh well other people will take care of it. I’m too busy making sure my hair stays perfect.” Yeah well a lot of people are thinking the same thing--that’s why we have this problem! So do your part. Please help the sea turtles--today’s actions affect tomorrow’s outcomes.
